Advance Passenger Information System

Currently SAA do not require APIS information for our passengers to travel, (except on routes to/from the USA). All checks are done at check-in when the passport is swiped. SAA do not require a minimum of 72hrs prior to departure to get the checks done.

Flight feeders

Together with its Star Alliance partners, South African Airways offers numerous feeder flight options both within Germany and within Europe to South African Airways gateways Frankfurt and Munich. Baggage can be labelled through all the way from the point of origin to any South African Airways destination, whereas baggage for domestic connecting flights only has to be collected at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and re-checked (immigration & customs have to be cleared at first port of entry when visiting the Republic of South Africa). Boarding passes are being issued from point of origin to the final destination. The minimum connecting Time in Frankfurt Airport is 60 minutes and in Munich Airport 40 minutes.

Step-up programme

With South African Airways Step-Up passengers have the opportunity to experience luxury travel while upgrading the seat from Economy Class to Business Class.

Whether the offer is successful or not depends on the factors mentioned below:

  • An original ticket needs to be purchased in advance.
  • How many seats are currently available for upgrade
  • How much money the passenger has offered for the upgrade
  • What other bidders have offered for the upgrade
  • The SAA Voyager status of the passenger

The procedure to bid for the upgrade:

Once the passenger has obtained confirmed flight tickets, the passenger receives an email where potential availability of seats for upgrades are listed and a link to the Step-Up Offer page. After the link is opened, the passenger can start bidding.
