Exit row seats

Exit row seats can be bought at Frankfurt and Munich airport on the day of travel for EUR 79,- one way. Exit row seats can also be purchased in advance either by the travel agent in the booking system, online at www.flysaa.com or via your local SAA / GSA office at a rate of USD 75,- one way.


Additional Requirements and conditions for Exit Row Seats


In order to sit in the Emergency Exit Row Seat, passengers shall comply with all legal and safety standards:

  • Passengers must be at least 16 years or older at the time of flying and acknowledge the exit row briefing given by cabin crew once on board the aircraft.

  • Passengers must be willing to assist in the unlikely event of an emergency and be able to speak and understand English and carry out instructions. In the event of an emergency, passengers have to be able to check outside conditions and react to cabin crew commands and be able to reach, open, lift and throw out an exit door that weighs up to 27 kg.

  • Passengers cannot sit in the emergency exit row if they have any permanent or temporary impairment, for example, deaf, hearing impaired, blind, vision-impaired, any strength or mobillty limitation, intellectual impairment or be travelling with a service dog.

  • Passengers travelling with someone who needs their assistance in an emergency or passengers who are seated with an infant or passengers who require an extension seat belt, will not ne eligible to be seated in an Exit Row Seat.

  • SAA has the sole discretion,  at check-in or boarding, to determine wether a passenger meets the requierements to sit in an Exit Row Seat. If the passenger does not meet the requirements, they will be assigned a different seat.

Seat selection

South African Airways has expanded pre-booked seating options. Customers can now choose where they want to sit in advance. Whether travelling alone, or in company, customers can now select seating preferences, choosing between an aisle or window, ensuring they’re seated with family, or with the assurance of looking forward to a little extra leg room.

  • Passengers booked in the ‘Saver’ (G, W and L class) and ‘Plus’ (V, T, Q, S, and H) fare families for domestic flights, and passengers booked in the ‘Saver’ fare family (G, W, and L class) for international flights can book chargeable seats.

  • Passengers not opting to select this new benefit will be able to select those seats still available, free of charge, once online check-in opens ( 24 hours before departure) or at one of our check-in counters at the airport. As part of our loyalty programme, certain tier level Voyager members may reserve a seat in advance and the fee will be waived.

Travel agents with bookings made on Galileo can make seat reservations via the 'Manage my Booking' tab on Flysaa.com, or those using Amadeus can make seat reservations on behalf of customers via their GDS. We will update this policy on flysaatrade.com when this functionality is available via other GDS. Seat reservations can also be made viayour local SAA Sales office.

Social seat selector

By means of the social seat selector, passengers have the opportunity to choose their individual seat neighbour with similar interests before the journey begins. For the service the steps below have to be completed:

1.    Online check-in on flysaa.com or with the mobile on m.flysaa.com

2.    Choose favoured Facebook profile and share it.

3.    Now, passenger views other Facebook profiles on the seating plan.

4.    Afterwards passenger can select a preferred seat neighbour.
