South African Airways was recognised as the overall winner in both the Business Airlines and Personal Airlines categories – both of which are new categories on this year’s list. The 2016 category list included 79 new categories.
The Ask Afrika 2016/2017 Icon Brands were created by the Target Group Index (TGI), in partnership with City Press and Rapport newspapers. The TGI survey, from where the Icon Brands results are sourced, is the largest of its kind in South African with 19 sectors, hundreds of product categories, and thousands of brands included in the measurement.
An enumerated area sampling design was employed and the universe includes all communities with more than 8, 000 inhabitants over 15 years of age. The data form 15, 107 consumers surveyed was weighted using Statistics South Africa’s mid-year population estimates, and calculated to represent over 24-million adult South African consumers.
Concisely, Icon Brands are brands that are recognisable and quintessentially South African. They are used by all South Africans, define a common experience and unite us as a nation, often on a daily basis and to which we are committed. They are brands, which South Africans love, are loyal to, and will even look for when abroad.
For the 2016 analysis, 163 category winners were identified: 39 Icon Brands and 64 Platinum Brands.
City Press and Rapport will publish a winners’ supplement this coming Sunday, 31 July 2016, so remember to get your copy and read more about us and the other winners.
